My church has recently implemented small group studies on Sunday evenings instead of a regular church service. Since I wasn't able to attend the last session because I was working with preschoolers, I was glad to begin this session on "Women Making a Difference in Marriage".
The first chapter had to do with being your husband's helper. I was surprised that the author assumed that some women wouldn't like the title of "helper". I suppose that some think of a helper as someone of lesser value, or someone who does the least important work.
I don't know about you, but I've always found the title encouraging to me as a wife. Without me, my husband couldn't be at his best. Without my encouragement, my husband could, in time, feel discouraged. Without my respect, he could feel inferior. Without my nurturing, he could end up in poor health. Without my love, he could feel lonely.
I love the KJV translation of "help-meet" for helper. I meet my husband's needs to help him be the best he can be. Those small, self-sacrificing acts can make a difference for Christ. How? By my heart-attitude. If I choose to be a helper, willing to do the "grunt work", to take a backseat, without complaint, I please the Lord. There's nothing I want more than that!
About the small group study ~ I LOVE it! This group of women is wonderful! I'm looking forward to getting to know them better and learning new tools to make a difference in my marriage!
In conclusion, I want to begin a new study with you all. If you haven't read any of Elizabeth George's books, you simply must read at least one! They never cease to enlighten, inspire, convict, and motivate me to be a better woman.
